However, the race to become Europe\u2019s leading hub for crypto funds is just\u00a0 <\/span>starting.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Does Luxembourg have what it takes to lead this burgeoning sector?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Read our key takeaways from a discussion hosted at a fund industry expert event organised by Q\u00a0 Securities and its partners Sygnum Bank and 6Monks. <\/span><\/p>\n

  1. Luxembourg\u2019s clarity in a fragmented market\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    The key challenge for the digital assets industry to grow is the fragmentation of Europe\u2019s regulatory\u00a0 <\/span>environment. While the Markets in Crypto-assets (MiCA) regulation was introduced to harmonise\u00a0 <\/span>crypto assets markets, it falls short in covering the set-up, administration, and depository roles for\u00a0 crypto funds. This regulatory gap has left EU member states to establish their own frameworks,\u00a0 <\/span>creating uneven standards across the continent.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    Filip Suchta<\/b>, Director at Q Securities, highlighted Luxembourg\u2019s pragmatic approach, which provides\u00a0 a clearer path for alternative investment funds (AIFs) to invest in crypto assets. \u201cLuxembourg\u2019s\u00a0 advantage is the clarity it offers. It\u2019s one of the few countries with the actors, infrastructure, and\u00a0 <\/span>regulation needed to make crypto investment funds a reality,\u201d he explained.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    \u201cFragmentation is the word. In other EU jurisdictions, you don\u2019t always have the depositary entities or\u00a0 AIFM capable of handling these assets. In Luxembourg, we do, and that\u2019s a competitive edge we can\u00a0 <\/span>leverage,\u201d added <\/span>Christophe Pilz<\/b>, Compliance Manager at 6 Monks. With 6 Monks recently becoming\u00a0 <\/span>the first authorised alternative investment fund manager (AIFM) to obtain a license from the CSSF for\u00a0 managing crypto funds, Luxembourg has already demonstrated its leadership in offering a regulated\u00a0 <\/span>framework for crypto funds. <\/span><\/p>\n

    2. Competitive edge: can Luxembourg stay ahead?\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

    As Europe\u2019s largest investment fund centre and the second-largest worldwide, Luxembourg has\u00a0 significant expertise in fund administration. While its regulatory clarity and financial infrastructure give\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    it a competitive edge, the panel warned that this advantage may be short-lived if Luxembourg fails\u00a0 <\/span>to act swiftly.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    \u201cLuxembourg has everything it needs to become the leading hub for crypto funds in Europe,\u201d\u00a0 remarked Thomas Campione, who moderated the panel discussion. \u201cNow the race to the top is about\u00a0 <\/span>to start for real.\u201d This sentiment echoed through the discussion as speakers urged Luxembourg not to\u00a0 rest on its laurels.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    The competitive landscape is not just within Europe but extends to offshore jurisdictions, where\u00a0 <\/span>regulatory flexibility may attract more agile crypto investors. \u201cWith every disturbance in the digital\u00a0 <\/span>asset space, we\u2019ve had pauses. Now, it feels like we\u2019re ready to take off. But we must ensure\u00a0 <\/span>Luxembourg is at the forefront, not lagging behind,\u201d said Filip Suchta. <\/span><\/p>\n

     <\/p>\n

    3. A need for more players to drive innovation\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

    Despite Luxembourg\u2019s regulatory readiness, the panel agreed that more players are needed to drive\u00a0 <\/span>competition and innovation. \u201cIt\u2019s important that larger players come into the industry. While\u00a0 Luxembourg has the right players in place now, we need many more to join to keep up with the\u00a0 <\/span>growing demand,\u201d said <\/span>Matthias Friedli<\/b>, Head of Funds & Hedge Funds at Sygnum Bank.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    Christophe Pilz also highlighted the growing institutional interest in crypto assets, driven in part by the\u00a0 successful launch of various crypto products. “The success we have seen is partly due to the limited\u00a0 options available right now,” he explained. “But as more crypto funds are introduced, with increasingly\u00a0 <\/span>complex and diverse investment strategies, the demand for specialised portfolio managers and\u00a0 service providers will only continue to grow.”\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    The panellists predicted that the next 12 months could significantly change the Luxembourg crypto\u00a0 <\/span>ecosystem as large players enter the market. If Luxembourg can maintain its competitive edge, this\u00a0 <\/span>could help it solidify its position as a European hub for crypto assets.<\/span><\/p>\n

     <\/p>\n

    4. Luxembourg\u2019s regulatory initiatives: a step in the right direction\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

    Luxembourg has already made strides through initiatives such as the CSSF\u2019s FAQ on alternative\u00a0 <\/span>investment funds investing in crypto assets. This FAQ, along with guidelines from professional\u2019s\u00a0 <\/span>association joint working group of ALCO and LetzBlock, has given managers full clarity on the\u00a0 possibility for an AIF to invest in crypto; the type of investors targeted and how to structure crypto\u00a0 <\/span>funds and the respective roles of the involved actors.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    Yet, according to Christophe Pilz, Luxembourg\u2019s first-mover advantage in regulatory clarity needs to\u00a0 be matched by education of institutional players \u201cWe need to continue to educate institutional\u00a0 <\/span>players to make them understand that the regulatory framework is in place, all the key stakeholders\u00a0 are here and the operational and legal set-up between actors has already been built,\u201d Pilz said. <\/span><\/p>\n

     <\/p>\n

    5. The race to become the number one hub for crypto funds\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

    The race to become Europe\u2019s leading crypto fund hub has only just begun. Despite Luxembourg\u2019s\u00a0 preparedness, its competitors are not far behind. Countries such as France, Germany, and the UK\u00a0 have already started implementing national strategies for digital assets, something Luxembourg <\/span>\u00a0lacks.<\/span><\/p>\n

    \u201cThis race has really not started yet,\u201d said Filip Suchta. \u201cLuxembourg has everything in place\u00a0 <\/span>regulatory-wise, but we must show that we are serious contenders, especially that other countries\u00a0 <\/span>might have larger expert pools\u201d. The panel agreed that a national strategy, will help Luxembourg to\u00a0 maintain is edge and keep running in front of other EU countries, even attract fund already established\u00a0 <\/span>offshore.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    Similar to those already seen in other EU countries, a national strategy could be a game changer.\u00a0 \u201cLuxembourg needs to make it clear to potential new actors that they shouldn\u2019t be afraid to take the\u00a0 leap. We have the framework in place, and with a national strategy, we can show the world we\u2019re open\u00a0 <\/span>for business,\u201d Matthias Friedli said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    Looking ahead\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

    As the crypto assets management space continues to mature, the panellists were optimistic about\u00a0 <\/span>Luxembourg\u2019s potential role in the future. Christophe Pilz forecasted a potential bull run in the crypto\u00a0 market driven by institutional adoption: \u201cWe\u2019re already seeing significant inflows into crypto products.\u00a0 <\/span>Once more regulated vehicles are in place, demand will be exponential.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    However, without sustained momentum and a broader national strategy, Luxembourg could miss its\u00a0 chance to lead. \u201cWe\u2019re at the starting line of something huge,\u201d said Campione. \u201cNow, it\u2019s up to us to\u00a0 <\/span>make sure Luxembourg doesn\u2019t just participate in the race but leads it.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
